東京・清澄白河 清州寮で開催された「茶の湯の五感 存在」にて、映像掛軸を制作。
「茶の湯の五感」とは、茶人 武井宗道さんのおもてなしによる
茶事という形式を通じて、複雑に見える茶の湯の世界を
どなたでもわかりやすく体感できる会です。
この会では、客人はいちど暗闇の中で五感を取り払い、
味覚や触覚や聴覚などの表現を通して、
茶会の中で五感を取り戻していきます。
亭主であるSOTOさんと今回の茶会についてお話ししながら、
今回の掛軸の主題を「不在によって存在をあらわす、際立たせる」と考えました。
いつもは、映像によって時間軸であったり光の要素のある、
現代的な掛軸（視覚 - 目にとって、見えやすいもの）を作らせていただいていますが、
今回はその映像の要素もなるべく隠し、気配に徹した物で作品を構成をし、
「うらがえしの掛軸」（目にとって、見えにくいもの）を展示することにしました。
釣釜の下に置かれた透明な器や幾何学的なキューブは、映像 - 光を当てることによって
存在感を増しますが、暗闇ではない場所ではその幻影を見ることはできません。
また、直接は見えない映像については、具体的になにか見えるわけではないが、
虹や蛍のような、茶室の外を感じさせるようなモチーフをふと思い出すように作ってみました。
また、聴覚の表現もそもそも、不在でありながら存在を感じさせる性質があります。
ここには「見えないけれど、茶室の中で鳴っていた音」が再生されます。
例えばひとつには、亭主の息の音が要素として使われています。
今ここで発生する炭や亭主の動く音に耳を澄ましていただきながら、
スピーカーからは、時間をずらした音の表現が流れます。
見せないということは、見てほしいことの裏返しであり、
「気配」を時折何かのきっかけで実感することで、
その人や物の存在を感じるものではないか、と作家は考えています。
このような思いが茶室の空間表現の裏側にありました。

The world of Japanese tea that looks complicated through the form of tea ceremony,
But It’s a good chance that everyone can experience in an easy-to-understand manner.
At this time, guests remove their senses in the dark.
Through expressions such as taste, touch and hearing,
they will restore five senses in the tea ceremony.
While talking with tea master SOTO about this tea ceremony,
I thought of the theme of this time's hanging scroll as "to reveal and highlight existence through absence".
Usually, there is a time axis and an element of light through images,
I usually make contemporary hanging scrolls (visual - things that are easy for the eye to see), but this time I tried to include elements of images as much as possible,
This time, however, I tried to hide the visual elements as much as possible and composed the work in a way that was entirely focused on signs,
and to display a hanging scroll that is hard for the eye to see.
The transparent vessels and geometric cubes placed under the hanging kettle are made to look more present when illuminated by light, but their illusions cannot be seen in a non-dark place.
And as for the images that are not directly visible, although we cannot see anything concrete, I tried to create motifs such as rainbows and fireflies, which make us feel outside the tearoom, as if we were suddenly reminded of the outside of the tearoom.
Also, hearing expression has the property of being absent and yet being present.
Here, 'sounds that cannot be seen but were sounding inside the tearoom' are reproduced.
For example, one element is the sound of the tea master's breath.
The audience is invited to listen carefully to the sound of the charcoal and the movement of the tea master, occurring in the here and now,
From the speakers, a time-shifted representation of the sound is played.
Not showing is the flip side of wanting you to see,
By occasionally feeling the presence of a person or thing,
I believe that by occasionally feeling the presence of a person or thing, we can sense their presence.
These thoughts were behind the spatial expression of the tearoom.
